Transforming Self-Criticism into Self-Love: 5 Steps towards a Positive Body Image
If you have difficulty accepting and loving your body, you are not alone. Even people who are very fit or have high self-esteem sometimes wish for changes in their body. It almost seems as if we are obligated to find flaws within ourselves. Insecurities often arise very early in our lives. Images on social media make it even more difficult for us to deal with our body. What leads us out of this trap? We show 5 ways.
Insecurities can arise at a young age, undoubtedly due to the body images conveyed in the media and the pressure of social media. Conversely, when we feel comfortable in our own skin, especially women are often perceived as narcissistic. Through concrete steps, we can learn to accept and even love our bodies. This not only brings immediate results but also serves as a role model for future generations
Accept your uniqueness.
Comparing yourself to others creates fear and is unrealistic. Nobody is perfect - whatever "perfect" may mean.
Make a list of the things you love about yourself and are grateful for.
Think about the compliments you have received and write them down. Maybe it's the color of your eyes, your personality, your good health, or your smile.
Connect with your intuition, the ultimate source of self-love, self-acceptance, guidance, and protection.
Every person has access to their intuition without requiring judgment or achievement. The love we receive from our intuition is unconditional, similar to the love we receive from our pets. Trust more in your intuition.
Work on healing trauma and letting go of thoughts and emotions that do not serve you.
Trauma is stored in our cells and memories, leading to a sense of disconnection. It is difficult to accept your body when you do not feel that it is a part of you. Grounding exercises, activities in nature, Epsom salt baths, and meditation can help. "The Body Keeps the Score" by Bessel van der Kolk, M.D., is an excellent resource to learn more about how trauma is stored in our physical body.
Do something that makes you feel great.
Paint your nails. Call a dear friend. Wear a piece of clothing you love. Choose a sport that brings you joy, not just obligation. When you feel better, you will find that your anxiety decreases. Often, fear is one of the main causes of why people focus on their appearance.
