Beautiful Skin With Omega-3
Omega-3 fatty acids are real all-rounders in our bodies. In particular, they help our skin look beautiful and healthy.
Beautiful skin is not only a sign of good health, but also a reflection of our inner balance and eating habits. Omega-3 fatty acids - the essential fatty acids that our bodies cannot produce - play an important role in our skin. These polyunsaturated fats are not only important for general health, but also help to keep your skin looking radiant and youthful.
Omega-3 fatty acids are abundant in fish such as salmon, mackerel and sardines, as well as plant sources such as flaxseed, walnuts and chia seeds. By incorporating omega-3-rich foods into your diet, you can support your skin's health from the inside out.
Silent inflammation
Silent inflammation goes unnoticed for a long time and takes its toll on our bodies. There is no sore or swelling. Unlike infections, silent inflammations do not cause fever or pain. They weaken the immune system and run their course without symptoms for a long time. After some time, less specific symptoms such as tiredness, headaches or night sweats may appear. Skin blemishes may also occur.
Chronic inflammation not only increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, allergies and high cholesterol, but also premature ageing, acne and general skin problems.
Our bodies are made up of trillions of cells. Omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids are incorporated into the cell membranes (outer skin of the cell), including skin cells. With our Western diet, we usually consume too much omega-6 fatty acids (e.g. in sunflower oil or pumpkin seed oil) and too little omega-3 fatty acids. This imbalance results in too many omega-6 fatty acids being deposited on cell membranes.
While omega-3s keep cell membranes soft and supple (and are very important for metabolism), too many omega-6s make the outer skin stiff and impermeable. The body uses omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids to produce highly active hormones that regulate metabolism. Omega-6 fatty acids are pro-inflammatory and omega-3 fatty acids are anti-inflammatory.
One of the main causes of skin problems such as acne, eczema, atopic dermatitis and premature skin ageing is inflammation. The anti-inflammatory properties of omega-3s help to reduce inflammation in the skin and thus alleviate the symptoms of skin problems.
Beautiful skin starts on the inside
Omega-3 fatty acids also strengthen the skin's moisture barrier and prevent collagen breakdown. When the moisture barrier is weakened, the result is dry, flaky skin. Adequate hydration makes our skin glow and protects it from the damaging effects of the environment.
If you are unable to get enough omega-3 fatty acids from your diet, there are a number of supplements available. High-quality fish oils with a low TOTOX value of less than 10 (freshness value of the oil) are a good alternative. For people on a vegan diet, there are oils with omega-3 fatty acids obtained from algae.
