It’s Trench Season (Soon)! A Love Declaration to the Legendary Coat
Ultra cool, stylish and perfect for cooler days: Why trench coats are back every year. (Plus: Why you absolutely need one if you don't have one in your wardrobe yet).
Autumn and winter are just around the corner. That means bye-bye cute summer outfits, bring on the autumn looks! Some people are looking forward to the lower temperatures, others would like to go back three weeks to postpone the end of summer. We sweeten ourselves the upcoming beginning of autumn by going through all the pieces of clothing in our heads that we can soon wear again. At the forefront: the trench coat!
Hardly any other garment is as (weather-) resistant and stylish at the same time.
There are just those clothes that are never not trendy. They may pop up from time to time in slightly different cuts and new colours, but fundamentally they still remain the same over the years. The trench coat is definitely one of those pieces.
The history of the trench coat
To understand how this garment has achieved its enduring fame, we need to travel back a few years. The trench coat has a long history and development. What is best known about the trench coat is that it was worn by higher ranking soldiers and officers during the First World War as a wind- and weatherproof coat. However, the actual birth of the iconic garment goes back even further, to the 19th century. Back then, inventors in Great Britain developed waterproof coats, which a little later became the template for the trench coat.
Responsible for the invention of the trench coat as we know it today were the entrepreneurs John Emary and Thomas Burberry. Both developed newer versions of established weather coats. Thomas Burberry, who gave his name to the Burberry fashion house, made a decisive contribution to today's look, above all by inventing the fabric type gabardine. However, the fact is - as with so many inventions - that different people contributed to its creation and development. Over the years, a simple weatherproof coat became a well-known classic.
"Throw on a trench coat & it will turn a simple outfit into a fashionable look in no time."
Why we love trench coats so much
What's special about the trench coat: Whether you find an iconic Burberry trench coat from 1997 in a vintage store or wear a new one from Prada, both options will look contemporary and cool. Just throw on a trench and it will turn a simple outfit into a well-rounded and fashionable look in no time. You can wear jeans and a simple long-sleeved shirt, for instance, which is a very basic combination in itself - but with a trench coat over it, you can turn it into a stylish look. There's not much you can do wrong. The only thing to remember is that the look shouldn't be too overloaded, as a trench coat stands out on its own.
So, whether in beige, camel or olive green: a good trench coat is a great investment that pays off. At the latest when the cool autumn wind whistles around your ears again and you can pull the long coat tighter around you!
