Is Zuckerberg's Dream Of The Metaverse Bursting?

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg dreams of making the Metaverse a reality. He proudly proclaimed his vision of a shared virtual platform that would bring people together worldwide and revolutionise the way we communicate, work and play. But now Zuckerberg may have to admit to himself that his dream of the Metaverse may be shattered.

For some time now, the Metaverse has been the dominant topic in tech circles. A concept that is supposed to integrate the digital world into real everyday life and enable a seamless fusion of virtual and physical reality. Facebook's first announcements about the Metaverse created real hype in the tech world.

The idea of creating an immersive and interactive digital environment where people could act, socialise and do business sounded extremely enticing. Companies from various industries jumped at the chance to invest in this emerging technology and bring their products and services to the Metaverse.

But the deeper Zuckerberg and his team dove into the development of virtual reality, the more clear the enormous challenges and limitations became. Technical obstacles such as data security, privacy concerns and the need for a reliable infrastructure represented just a few of the many problems that needed to be solved.

Another serious factor was social acceptance. Although some technology lovers were excited about the possibilities of the Metaverse, there were also a significant number of sceptical people who expressed concerns about the impact on privacy, social isolation and health. It became clear that Zuckerberg faced not only a technological challenge, but also a social acceptance hurdle.

While Facebook was trying to address these issues, other companies were rapidly moving towards the Metaverse (for example: "EpicGames/Lego Metaverse" for children or the Chinese Metaverse of "Bytedance"). Competition was getting stronger and Zuckerberg had to realise that his dream might not be the unique selling proposition he had hoped for.

In addition to the external difficulties, Zuckerberg also faced internal challenges within his own company. Employees were divided over the vision of the Metaverse and many did not understand the strategy behind it. Focusing on the Metaverse also meant that other areas could be neglected, jeopardising the financial health of the company.

In the autumn of 2021, the Facebook group was renamed Meta by Zuckerberg. The new name is supposed to reflect the company's vision and was the cornerstone of the Metaverse. However, the development cost a lot of money, so the group had to forfeit a profit slump of 55 % in the final quarter of 2022. The focus is currently likely to be more on Instagram's reel function and the topic of artificial intelligence. The group is only using 20 % of its budget for the further development of the Metaverse.

However, Zuckerberg seems to be sticking to his dream. There are reports of a planned cooperation with AR technology company Magic Leap. This would give Meta access to augmented reality and the start-up's expertise. So there is nothing left to do but wait and see how Mark Zuckerberg's dream develops.
