Summer is just around the corner. The best time to look forward to hot sunny days, but also to think about sun protection. Everyone knows by now that sunscreen is enormously important for our skin. The ultraviolet (UV) radiation of the sun has a very strong effect on our body. Especially the skin but also the eyes and hair are affected and health damage can occur due to UV radiation. In the worst case, this manifests itself in the form of skin cancer, but skin ageing and pigmentation spots are also the result. You can counteract this by protecting yourself against UV rays. The easiest way is with sunscreen. These have a UV filter and absorb part of the UV radiation.

What is UV radiation all about?

With harmful UV radiation, a distinction can be made between UVA and UVB rays. UVB rays are mainly responsible for sunburn and can cause skin cancer, including a malignant melanoma. The UVA rays, on the other hand, act in the deeper layers of the skin and play a major role in premature skin ageing, pigmentation spots and wrinkles by destroying collagen and elastin. UVA rays are said to be responsible for around 90% of skin ageing. They also occur much more frequently. There are about 500 times as many UVA rays as UVB. Conventional sun creams mainly protect against the UVB rays. If protection against UVA rays is also included, this is specially marked on the package.

What does SPF mean?

The sun protection factor, or SPF for short, is an international indicator of protection against UVB rays. The most common SPFs are 10, 15, 20, 30 and 50, which are designed to indicate how much longer you can stay in the sun before you get sunburned. The theoretical model is based on the self-protection time of an individual, which tells you how long you can stay in the sun without sunscreen without getting sunburned. This self-protection time is different for everyone and is approximately between 10 and 30 minutes. The self-protection time is multiplied by the SPF. If a person can stay unprotected in the sun for 10 minutes without getting sunburned and then also uses sunscreen with SPF 10, this person can spend 100 minutes in the sun without getting sunburned. (10 minutes * SPF 10 = 100 minutes of sun protection)

However, this is only the theoretical model behind the LSF. In reality, you cannot rely on this information. In general, you should apply sunscreen several times if you spend a long time in the sun, no matter what SPF you use. Moreover, sunscreen does not provide complete protection against UVA and UVB rays.

Primer and Moisturizer with SPF

Many people are already aware of the importance of sunscreen, but putting it into practice is another matter. Especially on the face, constantly applying sunscreen can be a hassle. You feel sticky and ruin your make-up. But doing without sunscreen is not an option. Dermatologists recommend protecting your face from UV rays with sunscreen every day, all year round. No matter what the weather or the season. If you want to effectively protect your face from ageing, you need to incorporate sunscreen into your beauty routine every day. For the face, it's important not to just use regular body sunscreen, but products specifically produced for the face. That's why there are built-in SPF in primers and moisturizers. These replace the extra sunscreen on the face, and you save a layer to apply.

The primer itself is a beauty tool that no one wants to do without. Even as a make-up base, the primer is unbeatable. It beautifies the skin's appearance, makes pores visually disappear, protects the skin from make-up and external influences such as dirt, and in addition, the foundation lasts all day thanks to it. Especially on hot summer days, it keeps make-up exactly where it should be. With additional UVA and UVB ray protection, the primer becomes an allrounder. The easiest way to stay well protected from the sun's rays and keep your make-up under control.

To be protected from the sun even on make-up-free days, moisturizer is also available with UVA and UVB protection. Therefore, skin care is directly linked to sun protection. The combination of moisturizer with sunscreen also prevents the sticky, heavy feeling of sunscreen on the skin and leaves the face refreshed and moisturized. When it comes to moisturizers and also primers with SPF, always pay attention to the product's label. Because only if it really says UVB and UVA protection, it is also for both.

Of course, you can also simply buy a facial sun cream and use it. However, this requires more effort to apply and is particularly burdensome for oily skin. If you go directly to the sunscreen in the primer or moisturizer, you can pay attention to the individual skin properties you need in the products and do not have to think about the additional sunscreen every day. Primers and moisturizers with SPF are therefore an absolute beauty and skincare must-have, not only now in summer, but all year round.
