Tarot and Self-Discovery: Which Queen is within Me?

A queen - that is a sovereign and self-confident woman. Even if we temporarily forget to keep this attitude - us queens, we know who we are and what we want. In Tarot, there are four queens, each embodying and representing a unique form of femininity. We asked Tarot expert Linda Hauptmann about their meanings.

Tarot represents a wonderful tool for self-reflection and self-discovery. The cards reflect our overarching themes and our current life phase. The so-called court cards, including the queens, are divided into the four elements: fire, water, earth, and air. Let us be inspired by the queens of the elements. Either one feels an immediate connection to one of the queens while reading the following section or one intuitively senses that the current life situation shows a clear emphasis on one of the four elements. If the assignment is not clear in this way, one can refer to the zodiac sign or ascendant - depending on which sign is more strongly pronounced according to one's own perception. By around the age of thirty, the ascendant often has greater significance.

The Element Earth (Capricorn, Taurus, Virgo): The Queen of Pentacles

In tarot, coins mainly represent everything tangible. This includes finances, home, possessions, body, family, and fertility. Like all queens, we find the queen of coins sitting on a throne. She holds her symbol, the golden disk, in her hands, looking appreciative and somewhat dreamy. Her surroundings radiate growth and fertility: she sits among rose vines and berry bushes under sunny skies. The queen of pentacles counts practicality, warmth, pragmatism, care, and constancy among her greatest strengths. She is the friend who always listens to us. The mother who gave us life and catches us when we fall. She is the partner with whom we can steal horses but also build a house. Apart from all these roles, she is a person who is at peace with herself, combining realism and warmth. She acts mindfully and calmly, sometimes almost stoically - but would do anything for her loved ones. She is not a superficial materialist, her clothing is rather elegant understatement for her position. However, she is extremely skilled and forward-thinking in financial matters. Her Achilles' heel goes hand in hand with her reliability and continuity: before making decisions, they must be thoroughly thought out and tested. She does not act impulsively - her path is carefully chosen, but for more dynamic people, her thoughtfulness can feel painfully slow. Impulsive actions and little craziness? Rarely. At this point, our queen of coins may well draw a little inspiration and courage from the other elements. But she should definitely preserve her warmth, creative potential, and composure. Because not only do we love her for that, but she also lays the foundation for her very own quality of life.

The Element Water (Pisces, Cancer, Scorpio): The Queen of Cups

The Queen of Cups is an ambivalent woman. Water represents emotions, intuition, gut feelings, our inner voice, deeper knowledge, and dreams. Our queen sits on a throne adorned with shells and small mermaids. She holds a lavishly decorated cup in her hands, staring at it almost piercingly. The sea ripples directly at her feet - she sits on sand and pebbles. Cliffs can be seen in the background. Her clothes, crown, braided hair, and face exude beauty. The Water Queen is a highly emotional aesthete. Her feelings and inner life are very important to her, and her intuition always guides her decisions. Her emotional intelligence makes her extremely lovable and approachable. She is highly empathetic, feeling her surroundings almost instinctively. She has understanding for many things and is always ready to listen. She quickly finds a wavelength with the people around her - whether in the workplace, at parties, or in dating. However, what can be challenging for those around her is that, like water, she sometimes seems to slip through one's fingers. She cannot be tied down or brought to firm decisions. The foundation of her throne, the sand, is not stable or enduring. Yet, her lovable nature, creativity, dreaminess, and femininity make this forgivable. She can learn from the other elements about groundedness, reliability, clear reasoning, and occasional bursts of masculine, assertive energy. They, in turn, can be inspired by her flowing, dreamy grace - with her ability to dream up beauty and bring it to life. Also, with her pronounced loveliness.

The Element Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius): Queen of Wands

She represents passion, drive, energy, creativity, intense emotions, and pure life force. Accordingly, the Queen of Wands sits on a shining orange-gold throne adorned with lions and sphinxes. She holds a wand and a sunflower in her hands. A black cat sits at her feet, indicating magic and spiritual knowledge. In the background, we see sand dunes. The beautiful queen looks kindly and slightly smiling over her kingdom. If a queen masters her element instead of being mastered by it, it is her! Although a person full of passions, deep feelings, and sensuality, she is completely sovereign and by no means driven. She radiates warmth, strength, and faces us openly as the only one. She is not afraid to show herself because she embodies feminine strength. What she wants, she creates with passion and drive. She does not shy away from overtime or extra training. With a goal in mind, she is unstoppable. She lives out her sensuality and sexuality self-determinedly. It is difficult to speak of weaknesses with her. Sometimes she may tend to exhaust herself too much. She may also push her environment too hard. Not everyone can meet her performance expectations. Other elements can set an example for her by showing a little more calmness, serenity, and courage to be vulnerable. But her power and her inspiring charisma more than make up for it.

The Element Air (Aquarius, Gemini, Libra): Queen of Swords

The element of Air is symbolized by the Swords. They represent our intellect, thoughts and logic, reason, and intelligence. In many ways, we see Air symbolized on the card of our Queen: mountainous clouds in the background, storm-tossed trees, a bird in the sky, clouds on her garment, and butterflies on her throne. In a majestic, stern posture, she shows us only her serious profile, with her sword raised and an urging gesture of her hand. The Queen of Swords is a complex person. She is highly intelligent and blessed with great clarity of perception. Whether it's challenging situations, inscrutable people, user manuals, or scams, she sees through and grasps everything in the blink of an eye. Her mind is her most valuable tool. And she not only excels at quick comprehension but also at applying insights. She rules. Lawyer, lecturer, physician, financial adviser: these are professions in which she shines with her skills. She is the friend who doesn't tell you what you want to hear when you're heartbroken (as our Cup Queen certainly would), but rather gives honest, albeit painful advice. She precisely analyzes the situation for you and opens your eyes. That can hurt - and that's also her weakness: she sometimes finds it difficult to empathize. Expressing feelings, showing understanding, forgiving, caring: these are qualities she can adopt from the other queens to round out her character. Despite her perceived severity or cool demeanor, she is a kind-hearted person with a pronounced sense of justice who always stands by her loved ones. Her keen insight and perspective are phenomenal!

"If we know our strengths and weaknesses, then we are unstoppable. Then we can create harmony, maximize our potential, and live in love with ourselves." Linda Hauptmann

What can we learn about ourselves from this categorization?

We asked Tarot expert Linda Hauptmann, who explains: "The fundamental personality structure of my female counterpart is most clearly revealed to me by one of the four queens in a 78-card deck: the queen of pentacles, cups, wands, or swords. We should keep in mind that we all have elements within us in varying proportions, and, as in life, things shouldn't be seen in black and white. The purpose of this categorization is self-reflection. Often, my clients recognize patterns in themselves in hindsight: why they have repeatedly taken certain paths. This often explains why a current decision doesn't feel quite right: it may not align with their own nature. And with a more concrete awareness of their own nature, future decisions can be made more in line with their personality type, making them more harmonious and successful."

What does this mean for us in everyday life?

A Queen of Cups may shine in a healing profession but may suffer internally behind a desk. A Queen of Wands may want to express and contribute but may suffer in a rigid structure, which, in turn, provides stability and satisfaction for the Queen of Pentacles. The Queen of Swords might be a fantastic teacher but may not feel comfortable as an educator. "With knowledge of our strengths and weaknesses, we can improve our lives on many levels, whether it's about professional priorities, relationship issues, family, or personal development," says Linda Hauptmann. Therefore, a tarot reading, which takes into account the current manifestation of our nature, can be very enriching. In a life that contradicts our strengths, characteristics, and potentials, tensions inevitably arise. Therefore, in my opinion, tarot can even be considered a tool for burnout or depression prevention, in addition to conventional methods."
