This is how Parisian fashion style goes: Franziska Nazarenus on timeless elegance
What doesn't work at all for a Parisian woman when it comes to fashion and French chic?
Franziska Nazarenus: "I observe that many fashion-savvy women in Paris - consciously or unconsciously - follow certain style rules. Conversely, I can say that when it comes to fashion, there are one or two things that Parisian women probably don't follow. Simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance," as Coco Chanel once put it. Parisians reject 'too much of a good thing'. Screaming logomania or overloaded styling with lots of accessories don't happen here, because effortlessly elegant French style is characterized by high-quality, timeless basics and discreet luxury."
Which garment then best expresses French chic?
Franziska Nazarenus: "A Parisian woman without a trench coat is like a French boulangerie without a baguette. Yes, if I had to choose one piece of clothing, it would be a trench coat in beige. One of my fashion investments for years - hopefully, decades - to come is this model from Attire. The key piece is timeless, chic yet a bit edgy - just like effortless French chic."
Which current icon of French chic is Paris really into right now?
Franziska Nazarenus: "The hottest Parisienne at the moment is Léna Mahfouf. And rightly so. Like no other, she embodies the unplayed naturalness and stylistic confidence à la française."
What are the secret "ingredients" to best combine French Chic?
Franziska Nazarenus: "Basics. This is probably THE secret of the timeless Parisian wardrobe. Because they can be combined with each other as well as many times with other pieces, like trend pieces or statement accessories."
And which basics are recommended then?
Franziska Nazarenus: "My top 5 are the trench coat - I don't need to say much more about that, as well as a well-cut oversized blazer: it gives every look its own androgynous touch and ensures coolness, elegance & lightness at the same time. Then the little black dress: it's actually like a canvas, which can be completely restyled with accessories and fits every life situation. Then, of course, denim jeans. The wardrobe essentials can be worn anytime, anywhere - whether super basic and casual or chic and elegant. And then there's the mini skirt. An absolute fashion classic. This one I like to combine with black tights and Mary Jane pumps."
What else is important for French Chic?
Franziska Nazarenus: "As already mentioned at the beginning, quality trumps quantity here, too. Many Parisians think about the lifespan when buying their daily must-haves and therefore supposedly spend a lot of money on fashion. Those who opt for a cashmere sweater are happy to pay 100 euros instead of 30 euros for a sweater made of synthetics. In addition, the perfect fit is crucial. The Frenchies' appeal: find the right cut for your body type and go for a cut that flatters you. In Paris, it's quite normal for women to go to the local tailoring boutique around the corner."
Where do you find your pieces when looking for quintessential French chic?
Franziska Nazarenus: "I find them in the grand magasins, like Galeries Lafayette or Le Bon Marché. Or also in the stores of the typically French girl brands like Musier, Rouje, Sézane, ba&sh and at basic specialists like Uniqlo. For very special pieces like classic bags or fancy shoes that give the look that certain something, I also like to visit vintage stores, like Lorette & Jasmin and/or the haute couture houses."
And what beauty secrets are needed to perfect French chic?
Franziska Nazarenus: "Here, too, the basics form the basis. The healthier the skin, the fewer products are needed. That's why facial cleansing and moisturizing is the central core of the beauty routine."
And what does the typical French Chic beauty routine consist of?
Franziska Nazarenus: "The facial cleansing consists of double-cleansing. It starts with an oil cleanser, which removes all oily deposits such as sebum, makeup, or sunscreen from the skin. This is followed by deep cleansing with a water-based facial cleanser. When it comes to makeup, the approach is always to focus on your facial assets. Transforming is out. Keeping the eyes happy with the iconic eyeliner à la Audrey Hepburn or the lips in a blush tone is timeless and thus completely in line with the look of Parisian women."
