More to Sea: van Dalsky Swimwear

Made in Austria swimwear, is still a rarity: van Dalsky designer Claudia Wendner on the courage to take on a niche segment.

Swimwear is a niche segment in Austria: how did you get started?

Precisely because swimwear is a niche segment in Austria, it became clear to me that it was time for me to start my own business. The time was right because I looked for products that were not yet “abundant on every corner”.

Not exactly an easy passion. How much design truly ts onto so little fabric?

A good question. When it comes to cuts, you’re definitely more limited with swimwear. Therefore you often see very similar cuts. Nevertheless, there will never be a shortage of fabrics, materials, and details.

Where does your inspiration come from?

I get my inspiration from life. Whether it’s a walk-in Italy, a work of art at the museum, nature, or views of the sea. What really inspires me is the feeling behind it. I follow my intuition without thinking too much about it.

Three adjectives that describe your style?

Timeless, feminine, elegant.

Provocative question: Neusiedler- see or St. Tropez - where do you see your designs?

Even though I personally prefer St. Tropez, my fashion can be worn anywhere. This characteristic is very important to me.

How important are concept stores such as Runway Vienna, especially for smaller labels?

Very important! I think it is this collaboration that ultimately defines the ‘‘concept store concept’’. Here the customer finds carefully selected products that are not available in bulk. You can find your own “one of a kind piece” here, enjoy a completely new

shopping experience, and also support smaller or new labels. A good symbiosis!

To stay with the Runway Vienna example: how close is the collaboration in terms of the development of the collection, for example in terms of customer feedback?

We are only starting this summer, but based on my assessment of Alexis and Katharina, I am sure that we will exchange ideas. I believe in a customer-centric approach and I make my fashion for all women, not just for myself.

What do you do during the winter season when business is naturally a little slower for your niche?

Well, van Dalsky has only been around since last year. But luckily, on our large planet, there are always a few places where it is summer, even when it is winter in Austria.
