The Best Natural Beauty Routine to Save Your Damaged Hair
Is your hair suffering this winter? Check out my tried and true haircare routine using only natural products to moisturize and revive your hair!
As we brave the cold during the winter months, we all have one problem in common: our hair. Cold and dry air can actually cause the cuticle of the hair strand to lift. Because of this, moisture cannot stay sealed within the hair shaft. Without the ability to retain that moisture, hair is dangerously prone to breakage, resulting in dry and frizzy hair.
With all of the chemcial treatments available on the market, it's tempting to overload your hair with bond builders and frizz smoothing in-office treatments. These treatments provide quick and easy results, but do not contribue to healthy hair in the long run. Natural hair products do not contain harmful ingredients that provide "instant" results, but use naturally sourced ingredients that provide hair with the necessary nutrients for properly nourished and healthy hair. While it can take a bit more time to see these results, you can rest assured that the health of your hair will improve overtime, resulting in sustainable progress.
After months of testing the best natural products on the market, here is my perfected hair care routine, sure to save your hair from the harsh winter.
Using the right oil on your hair is the ultimate treat for dry and damaged hair. Many oils on the market contain silicone, a highly controversial emollient meant to smooth the hair. While silicones won't kill you, their positive effefcts are entirely temporary. Silicones work by sealing the strand with the inention to trap moisture in the hair. This works almost immediately, but over time, contributes to buildup and dryness. Using a natural oil does not promise immediate results, but after a few uses, hair is stronger, healthier, and shinier.
The Miracle Hair Oil by Blab'hair is completely naturally derived, using over 6 natural oils and vegetable proteins. It is silicone and chemical free, making it a perfect addition to any natural hair routine. Without using synthetic perfumes, this oil smells absolutely fabulous with its inclusion of natural Orange Blossom and Camelia flower oil.
I love this oil so much that I use it twice in my hair routine. First, I put a few drops on my fingers and massage into my scalp for 5 minutes. The massage stimulates the hair follicle, encouraging growth as the oils nourish the skin on the scalp. I leave this oil on the hair for 20 minutes before washing. I also use this oil after I dry my hair. I put two drops in my palms, rub my hands together. and evenly distribute the oil throughout my hair. It leaves my hair silky and shiny, significantly softer than before.
Finding the best shampoo for you can quite literally make or break your hair. Chemicals like sulfates are great for removing excess dirt and oil from your hair, but they often take too much oil, leaving hair brittle and dry. Sulfates also strip hair color, making it difficult to maintain highlights and root touchups. Harsh chemicals in shampoo can also severly irritate the scalp, contributing to dandruff and psoriasis. A natural shampoo succeeds in cleansing the hair while maintaining healthy oil levels.
The Scalp Exfoliating Shampoo by Rahua works in two ways to contribute to healthy hair. First, it uses crushed Star Anise to gently exfoliate the scalp, eliminating dandrff and unclogging pores. Natural oils like Rahua, Sacha Inchi, and Morete pamper dry hair using ancient Amazonian ingredients that are proven to improve the overall health of hair. By nurturing the scalp and strands simultaneously, this shampoo promises soft, clean, and shiny hair.
This shampoo is honestly one of my holy grail products. Since I have thick, curly, and damaged hair, I only wash my hair twice a week. This shampoo is nourishing and gentle, so I am able to use it every time I wash. To ensure a thorough cleaning and exfoliation of the scalp, I like to massage this into my scalp for at least two minutes before rinsing. I swear this has helped so much in my journey to grow my hair!
Of course when speaking about dry hair, conditioning is arguably the most important step in the process. Many conditioners on the market use parabens to coat the hair and feign results. This wax coats the strand to make it look like the hair is softer, but in reality it just contributes to buildup. Unnatural fragrances also can irritate your hair despite their pleasant smells.
The Herbal Conditioner by The Innate Life is truly a suitable solution for all hair types. With two separate options, this conditioner caters to both fine and thick hair types. Using ayurvedic herbs and oils, this conditioner works to treat hair from multiple angles, curing a wide variety of sources of dryness.
This conditioner has made a huge impact on my hair When I use it, I like to drape a towel on top of my shower to encourage steam. It also works great in the steam room at your favorite spa or gym. Steam opens the hair cuticle, allowing product to penetrate the hair on a deeper level. I saturate the hair with conditioner and leave on for about 5 minutes before rinsing with cold water. Rinsing with cold water helps prevent damage by closing the cuticle after washing, sealing the healthy herbs and oils in each strand.
Leave-in products provide essential moisture to the hair, protect it from environmental and heat damage, and help detangle after showering. Nearly every hair type benefits from the use of leave-in conditioners, but you may find them particularly healpful if you have dry, damaged, or frizzy hair. It is incredibly important that leave-in products use healthy and natural ingredients since they spend the most time on your body.
Innersense Sweet Spirit Leave-In Conditioner works by detangling hair and increasing moisture. The lightweight conditioning spray is infused with oils, herbs, flower essences, and a touch of cruelty-free honey to maintain hair health and manageability. Lavender essential oil adds a delicate fragrance without using harsh perfumes. Certified organic plant extracts leave hair looking its best and ready for any style as you blowdry.
I like to spray this on towel dried hair and use a wet hair brush to comb the product into the hair evenly. If the hair is too wet, I find that the excess water prohibits proper absorption. If my hair is super dry, I will add some of my Blab'hair Miracle oil on the ends to help with deep conditioning. This product is great for blowouts since it is so lightweight, and I find that I do not really need an extra styling creme to see the best results.
Who doesn't love sweet smelling hair? Spraying your favorite perfume on your hair may increase the longevity of the scent, but the high alcohol content and unnatural fragrances can severely dry out the hair. Typical fragrances often contain phthalates, or chemicals that help the scents last on the skin. Health risks for phthalates include cancer, human reproductive and developmental disorders, endocrine disruption, birth defects & respiratory ailments.
The Blab'hair Hair and Body Mist is used to refresh and rejuvenate by adding a delicate orange blossom scent that replenishes life to your hair and turn heads with an intoxicating scent at the same time. This is the first hair and body mist that uses 100% natural ingredients like organic orange blossom. This hair mist is not just a perfume. Orange Blossom Water infuses the hair with nutrients and moisture, hydrating the hair to make it soft and shiny.
My whole life smells like this mist. I use it on dry hair since I have found it lasts longer than spraying it on wet hair. The smell is absolutely heavenly. I use this on my hair daily, and on top of providing excellent fragrance, it adds shine as well. It is a great finishing spray. As a bonus, I use this as my bedtime perfume on my body. It is totally relaxing and it helps me sleep knowing that I am not sleeping in toxic chemicals.
