As an Austrian Olympic gold medalist and World Cup winner, Hermann Maier is a true legend. Affectionately christened the "Herminator" by Austrians, he has won four overall World Cup victories (1998, 2000, 2001 and 2004), two Olympic gold medals (both 1998) and three world championship titles, and is considered one of the best alpine ski racers of all time.

Mr. Maier, the world of top-level sports and that of fashion and luxury are closely linked. Why do so many luxury brands rely on top athletes like you when it comes to marketing their products?

Hermann Maier: "Personally, I'm not that aware of it. I've never attached any particular importance to the glamour factor, which plays a certain role in the fashion world. But it's possibly the case that the marketing of such brands depends on a level of awareness and that the idea of performance also plays a role."

You have been the face of several Rolex campaigns in the past. How did this partnership come about?

Hermann Maier: "It goes back to 2006 when Rolex approached me before the Olympic Games in Turin. Rolex is very active in sports and is present at the most important events. The brand was also very involved in Kitzbühel. In any case, our partnership continues to this day. Just recently, I was able to attend the Austrian Grand Prix and the Salzburg Festival at Rolex's invitation."

Do you have a favorite designer? Which brands do you like to wear privately?

Hermann Maier: "I don't pay much attention to designers and brands when choosing a garment. It's more about quality, durability and functionality. Of course, I also have a few jackets and suits hanging around, but they are rarely used."

Do you own a piece of clothing or an accessory that is particularly close to your heart? Which one and why?

Hermann Maier: "It is impossible to point out anything in particular. But in any case, it is a sporty outfit that has to serve its purpose. Whether on water, on land, in the mountains, or on the slopes. If it is in addition also still my taste, it is also no mistake. In that context, I'm fortunate to have quite excellent partners in Ortovox and Atomic."

Is there an item of clothing or an accessory that you collect or own in numerous versions? For example, sneakers or watches?

Hermann Maier: "Over the years, I accumulate a bit of stuff. However, I am consciously not a collector. Of course, I have a few skis and ski boots around. And the various trophies and medals are excellently housed in the gallery in Flachau."

What does luxury mean to you?

Hermann Maier: "Time for myself and the family. Exercise in nature. And a bit of peace and quiet now and then."
