"Love Actually", "Cinderella" & Co. - again?!

Even if the usual Christmas movies are an integral part of our festive program, this excess of harmony can also become a bit tiresome in the long run. If you are also tired of too much love and happiness or your family's film suggestions cause heated debates over the holidays, then L'Officiel Austria has an interesting selection of unconventional films for you that will please absolutely everyone! The list includes crime thrillers, thrillers, romances, and comedies set during the Christmas season or set in a wintry setting and can be watched on the major streaming channels.

Todd Haynes' adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's novel "The Price of Salt" is a 2015 romance film. Set in 1950s New York, Todd Haynes tells the story of a forbidden love between salesperson Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara) and the slightly older, married Carol Aired (Cate Blanchett). Together they finally break out of their normal lives and embark on a journey. But Carol's past and the existing conventions of the 50s quickly catch up with them.

Halston

Yes, it's a series and not a film, but we still have to recommend it to you again this year. If you haven't seen it, you can delve into the soul of arguably the most important US fashion designer of the 70s. The rise of Halston, who made it from a violent Midwest family to the highest circles of New York society and established himself as a fixed star with his sense of style and trend. Unfortunately, he soon burned up after that, but he was immortalized in the mini-series by Hollywood star Ewan McGregor. Perfect for the festive season to catapult us back to the days of Studio 54. Watch it on Netflix.

Kinky Boots

Kinky Boots is a British tragicomedy based on a true incident. After Charlie Price reluctantly takes over his father's men's shoe factory in Northampton, he finds out that the company is on the brink of ruin. After a futile business meeting in London, Charlie meets drag queen Lola. A short time later, Charlie comes up with the clever idea that could save his family business: sturdy high heels for men! With Lola's help, Charlie shakes up the prudish London suburb!
An incredibly moving film that encourages people to not stigmatise because of the way people decide to live.

Knives Out

In an interview with The Independent, film director Rian Johnson reveals that he had a classic old-fashioned whodunit à la Agatha Christie in mind for this film. Thus, "Knives Out" also begins according to a classic "whodunit" template: a dead body, numerous suspects, two investigators and the question "Who did it?". The twisty plot demands the audience's full concentration and invites guesswork.

Admittedly, this comedy starring Sandra Bullock is de facto like a trivial Christmas romance. Nevertheless, due to the well-crafted humour and the heart-warming performance by Sandra Bullock, we can overlook the occasional kitsch and confidently include the film in our list.

L.A. Confidential

L.A. Confidential is a complex thriller about drugs, murder and the corruption of the L.A. police during the 1950s. Although the script has nothing festive to show, a few atmospheric lights and Kim Basinger in a fur coat seem to be enough to pass as a festive classic.
