The hype of Goth Fashion through the series "Wednesday"

Jenna Ortega becomes a goth icon in "Wednesday", taking the trend around goth style to the next level.

Back in December, when the series "Wednesday" premiered on Netflix, probably no one was aware of how big the hype would be for the series and especially for the lead actress Jenna Ortega. But still: "Wednesday" reached the top of the Netflix charts.

Especially the character of Wednesday could do credit to the existing cult status, the countless "The Adams Family" adaptations established. And on top of that: The costume design left a lasting impression on many viewers. It is very different from the clothing style of other characters in the series. Wednesday is dressed in black and white, wearing platous shoes and black hair braided in two pigtails, which makes her a new goth icon, especially for the younger generation.

Goth as we know it today is all about dark colors, mostly black, and elevates its effect from dramatic silhouettes. Goth draws its many different inspirations from punk, streetwear to Victorian-inspired lace. Wednesday modernizes goth once again, adding a new twist as costume designer Colleen Atwood mixes classic goth elements, trendy Y2K and a preppy dark academia aesthetic.

And even before the release of "Wednesday," Goth-inspired clothing was increasingly rising in popularity. Stars like Zoey Kravitz, Kourtney Kardashian and Kate Moss are leading the way. Whether on the red carpet like Bella Hadid on or on the streets as well as Julia Fox - lace, leather, black - Dramatic is now to be. Pioneers are designers like Rick Owens and Yohji Yamamoto and other brands are following suit: The models at Prada wear platoustiefel and black lace.
