Old but gold: These it-bags from the 2000s are currently experiencing their revival
Y2K - this abbreviation stands for "Year Two Kilo" (where 2K stands for 2000) and originally referred to a computer problem, the so-called "Y2K bug". Today, we know the term mainly because of the ongoing fashion trend of the early 2000s. Paris Hilton, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera are considered icons of that time, as they influenced an entire generation with their outfits. And even if some people might be afraid of the fashion of that time, they can't resist some of the newly interpreted trends. Above all, the baguette bag is celebrating its big comeback and almost every luxury fashion house currently has its own interpretation of the baguette bag in its current collections. We show you which models we have our eyes on (again)!
Dior Saddle
Let's start with a true icon of the so-called noughties: the Dior Saddle Bag! Created in 1999 by the then head designer, John Galliano, and launched in 2000, this model could only become a hit. With its extravagant, saddle-inspired shape and the elegant hardware with a pose "D" for Dior, the Saddle Bag corresponded exactly to the spirit of the times. It wasn't long before It girls like Paris Hilton were sporting the bag and more and more celebrities followed suit. As the new creative director, Maria Grazia Chiuri finally helped the iconic bag model make a big comeback back in 2018. Today, the "Saddle" is one of the best-selling designer bags. Whether in a clean leather look, with a classic Dior Oblique pattern or in a colourful 70s patchwork look: the Dior Saddle is a true all-rounder that is high on our bag wishlist.
Louis Vuitton Pochette
From small accessory to It-bag: the triumph of the Louis Vuitton pochette actually began as an addition to every piece of luggage of the luxury brand. Incidentally, the term pochette (meaning "the underarm bag") is French for handle bags that are so small that only the essentials, such as a mobile phone and lipstick, fit inside. Today, the pochette is (again) on everyone's lips as a popular all-rounder - and not only in its classic Monogram canvas version, but also the colourful versions of the noughties (especially the Murakami Monogram Multicolour model) are currently enjoying great popularity on the second-hand market!
Fendi Baguette Bag
As already mentioned at the beginning, the iconic Baguette Bag by Fendi is currently celebrating its big comeback. This model first hit the shops in 1997 and since then there have been over 700 (!) different versions on the market! In a way, the baguette bag also wrote fashion history: It was the first luxury handbag Carrie wore in "Sex And The City". The Baguette Bag thus ushered in the era of designer fashion in TV series. Up until then, borrowings from luxury fashion houses were not really common. But after Fendi lent its Baguette Bag to the production, SATC stylist Patricia Fields could hardly save herself from requests: every fashion house suddenly wanted to outfit Carrie, Samantha and Co. With the return of "Sex And The City" to the screens, it is no wonder that "the baguette", which incidentally owes its name to its elongated shape, is now one of the most sought-after designer bags.
Balenciaga Motorcycle Bag
The "Motorcycle Bag" by Balenciaga is currently experiencing a kind of renaissance. In the noughties we mostly saw it hanging on the arms of Kate Moss or Sienna Miller - now it's back! Designed by then creative director Nicolas Ghesquière at the turn of the century, the bag is characterised by its soft, scuffed leather and rock'n'roll chic. Today, as part of the "Neo Classic" designs, the Motorcycle Bag gets a modern update, just like the City Bag. And if you can't make friends with it, you'll also find it on the second-hand market!
Prada Nylon Bag
Launched by Miuccia Prada in 1984, the Prada Nylon Bag is another designer bag that fashionistas around the world have now rediscovered. For a long time, the bag was frowned upon in the world of luxury fashion because of its material. But it was precisely this mix of timeless design and functional outer material that made the handbag so popular with its wearers. Today, the nylon bag can be seen again on numerous celebrities such as Kaia Gerber and influencer Caro Daur. In 2022, the bag will get a modern update: the Prada Re-Edition will revive the nylon bag in new colours, shapes and even materials!
Mulberry Luella Gisele
Originally designed by Luella Bartley in collaboration with Mulberry, this it-bag was simply called "Luella" when it first appeared. The bag was originally launched in two sizes and two colours - black or brown. The press eventually renamed the model "Gisele" because none other than Gisele Bündchen wore the bag at the Mulberry show. Her appearance triggered a hype and from then on could be seen on the arms of numerous celebrities such as Christina Aguilera. As a result, the "Gisele" was available in many more colours and styles. If you have your eye on the bag model today, you have to look around on the second-hand market. Because the once so celebrated model is currently not available in the Mulberry webshop.
Louis Vuitton Denim Baggy
We all remember when Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake walked the red carpet in 2001 in an all-over denim look that went down in fashion history. Well, what can we say - denim belongs to the noughties like baguettes to Paris. Of course, this is also evident in the bags of the time: Above all, the Louis Vuitton baggy in denim look remains in our memory. If you want to shop for this model, you have to rummage on the various second-hand platforms. But there are also new denim babies from Louis Vuitton: With the Jacquard Denim collection, the trends of the past are taken into account - we love it!
