She is a successful actress, singer, fashion model, a symbol of the 60s era, a style icon, and last but not least, a muse. She still shines proudly in the starry sky. It is hard not to recall the iconic songs written for Jane Birkin by the legendary composer, actor, and director - Serge Gainsbourg. Their duet "Je t'aime, moi non plus" is translated as "I love you – me not anymore" became a real anthem of the decade - it was banned, it topped the charts, and even today it is still known as one of the best songs about love.

Outrageous and scandalous, bold and passionate, devoted and gentle, Jane Birkin is rightfully named one the brightest women of all times. Not so long ago, in her book of memories and interviews, she revealed some of her secrets.

Diaries for Monkeys or All for Love

Back in her childhood days, Jane had a favorite toy - a monkey in a jockey suit, which became her faithful companion for many years. The little girl had almost no friends, so she trusted the dear Monkey with all her secrets. It was to this Monkey, who she dedicated the diaries to, which she kept starting from the age of 11.  Later on, these diaries formed the basis of her biographical book. The monkey stayed with Jane into her adulthood, becoming a talisman of good luck. Birkin was never apart from Monkey – taking it with her to important meetings, film sets, and trips. However, she easily said goodbye to the ‘dear friend’ for the sake of her beloved man.

Jane met the legendary Serge Gainsbourg on the set of the film Slogan in 1968 in Paris. She was 20 and he was 41; she was a young debutante, while he already knew his worth. His slightly arrogant attitude towards an English woman, who did not know French, did not prevent passion flames to start flaring up between them over time. Their love story can be compared to a 12-point ocean storm and the soft splash of a forest lake. Even after the official separation in the early 80s, they maintained friendly relations, and maybe even something more. It was to Serge, to whom the woman gave her favorite talisman – The Monkey. She has put her talisman, her favorite toy, and perhaps her best friend to the dear man's coffin when she said goodbye to him forever in 1991.

Straw Basket as an Excuse for a Fashion Trend

Among many of Jane Birkin's passions, it is definitely worth noting straw baskets, which she loved to take instead of a purse. Quite often, because of this, she was not allowed into French restaurants, but the woman did not change her style. Once the accessory had let her down - it broke right at the airport, causing Jane to carry her personal belongings in her hands. The owner of the House of Hermes became a witness of this trouble. He immediately promised that upon her return, the woman would have a handbag that could securely hold everything she needed. Jane had instantly sketched a model on a napkin, and the famous model Birkin from Hermes was born. Later, the actress and singer expressed her attitude towards the Birkin bag with the lines from the famous duet. Can you guess which one?

Black, Iconic, Masculine

Since the 60s Jane had considered the iconic Yves Saint Laurent tuxedo her favorite outfit for stage and outings. In fact, she was wearing her favorite pieces of clothing at the photoshoot in 2016 for Fashion House. In various interviews, Birkin has repeatedly said that she prefers men's clothing and a permanent tuxedo. After all, she values comfort but is still committed to her style, which originated with her first successes.

It is hard to state for sure what brought Jane Birkin luck and popularity - her talismans or talent, honesty or dedication, meetings or parties. However, this woman knew how to faithfully love and leave dear people, how to be strong and weak at the same time, how to experiment and not be afraid of criticism. Perhaps that is why one speaks about her as a legend, with sincere respect and admiration.
