Historical Glamour: Gucci's Cosmogonie Campaign
Gucci's 2023 Cruise Cosmogonie Campaign is an ode to Renaissance paintings.
Gucci has unveiled the Cosmogonie Cruise 2023 collection campaign. Taking inspiration from the fashion show, which was staged in May at Castel del Monte, a 13th-century fortress built by Frederick II of Swabia near Andria, the campaign also combines elements of distant eras and geographies.
"A myriad of wonders come together in the latest Gucci Cruise 2023 collection campaign, illuminating the connections between the past and the future" -Gucci
After Alessandro Michele's farewell and while waiting for the appointment of a new creative director, Gucci presents the Cosmogonie Cruise 2023 campaign. Meanwhile, the fashion house has announced its next fashion show, which will take place on Friday, January 13, at the opening of Milano Moda Uomo. This is a significant change of direction for the fashion house: in fact, it is the Florentine fashion house's first all-male show since the pandemic began.
The spectacular fashion show of Gucci's Cosmogonie collection, presented at Castel del Monte in Puglia, a UNESCO heritage site, last May, was inspired by constellations. On the garments on the runway, details referenced the stars and magical myths. For the occasion, the fashion house had also registered 350 stars on behalf of the guests-a decidedly unique and original invitation. And the campaign, created by renowned photographer duo Mert & Marcus, consists of a series of portraits in the style of Renaissance paintings, with references to astronomy and the cosmos. Art direction for the Gucci Cosmogonie Cruise 2023 campaign is by Christopher Simmonds.
Just like a painting
The collection's designs draw inspiration from various historical periods: the 16th century, the Victorian era, and even the 1940s. Thus the models in the Gucci Cosmogonie Cruise 2023 campaign pose surrounded by props that recall the works of poets, scholars, astronomers, philosophers and mathematicians who contributed to the collection's inspiration, which suggest the countless inspirations that define the collection. The result is a universal language of encounters, stories, shapes and proportions. And it is from this connective structure that the poetic harmony of colors, silhouettes and references emerges, even more vividly.
Among the pieces in the collection, campaign images highlight transparent, shimmering dresses and faux fur outerwear. 16th-century ruffles, Victorian-inspired lace-up cuissardes, 1940s silhouettes, and 1970s optical motifs. The Gucci Cosmogonie campaign highlights the Gucci Aphrodite and Gucci Blondie handbag designs.
