Hairstyle trend: The braids of the 90s and 2000s are back!
When chunky sneakers (cue Buffalos!) conquered the hearts of fashionistas again a few years ago, it was already on the horizon: The return of the 90s and early 2000s! Teen idols like Emma Bunton aka Baby Spice, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Sailor Moon shaped the girlish, playful but also wild look of that time.
In 2021, the fashion, make-up and hair styles of the 90s and Y2K are more present than ever. The trend of the moment in terms of hairstyles are pigtails. Newly interpreted variations are currently flooding Tiktok, Instagram and the like. Influencers like Chiara Ferragni and celebrities like Ariana Grande, Jennifer Lopez, Hailey Bieber and Miley Cyrus are showing the way - and now we're following suit!
But beware: all those whose fashion alarm bells are now going off - after all, the time around the turn of the millennium was long considered the time of fashion and styling sins - can now breathe a sigh of relief. The newly interpreted hair styles are definitely suitable for different looks: from sporty to elegant, everything is possible. What's more, the retro braid hairstyles are super easy to copy, conjure up volume and suit everyone. Even the hair structure doesn't matter! We show you three looks for the trend of yesteryear!
Pigtails reinterpreted
Admittedly, the look has something very childish about it. To prevent this, you should not overdo it. Our recommendation: Instead of two big pigtails, simply separate the upper from the lower part of the hair and create two pigtails with the upper part only. The pigtails should sit tightly at the back of the head and at the same height. The lower section of hair is worn open. To complete the 90s style, we recommend letting a small strand of hair hang freely in the front so that it hugs the face. By the way, the hair can be worn waved or straightened. Miley Cyrus demonstrates this with her wild look at the Lollapalooza Festival. Ariana Grande, on the other hand, interprets the trend in her usual glamorous way.
Mini braids
Speaking of braids that frame the face, this look is all about that: This look lives exactly from that. All you need are two thin strands that fall down the sides of the cheeks. To do this, simply part the hair in the middle, then separate a small section of hair on the left and right above the forehead and weave it in. It doesn't matter whether the hair is short or long, or whether it is tightly or loosely braided - it is entirely up to your personal taste. The rest of the hair is worn loose or slightly wavy. The casual, playful look that Dua Lipa and Hailey Bieber love is ready.
Braids with a twist
This look is already all the rage among female tikokers and Gen Z! Easy to style, the hairstyle also fits in perfectly with the 90s and Y2K fashion trends currently in vogue. For the look with a special twist, two small strands are tied at the front at the side of the face into high, thin mini-braids. These are then laid back and tied into another braid with hair on the opposite side of the back of the head. Finish with a little tousling and the look is ready with that special something. Sounds complicated, but it's really easy to style.
