Last Look at Jean Paul Gaultier’s Runway Show Coming Soon
Boy George singing “Back to Black” by Amy Winehouse. Models walking down the runway en pointe. Pandemonia, one of the fashion set’s favorite characters, wearing Madonna’s iconic cone bra; Snowy, her inflatable dog, in tow. Calling Jean Paul Gaultier’s final runway showing over the top would be an understatement. The Spring/Summer 2020 Haute Couture event, which served as the designer’s bow from the runway, was the grandest of exits, and now it’s eternalized in film.
This weekend, French documentary filmmaker Loïc Prigent will release Jean Paul Gaultier se défile!, a 52-minute film offering a behind the scenes look at the creation and presentation of the designer’s final catwalk. Gaultier—most commonly called fashion’s enfant terrible—has long been known for his love of experimentation, breaking the rules, and defying gender boundaries. The announcement that his January 2020 show would be the last in his 50-year career was perhaps his greatest surprise.
Prigent has been posting snippets of this footage on his Instagram account in anticipation of its debut September 26. In one, the filmmaker catches an iconic moment: Gaultier has spotted Anna Wintour leaving his show venue. Prigent quotes the designer in his caption: saying “She who doesn't love me at all has come! How nice!”
Jean Paul Gaultier se défile! premieres on France 5 on September 26, 2020.
